BBQ Across America

Background:
Barbecue, also spelled barbeque or BBQ is as American as apple pie.  There is something truly sublime about moist, smoky, fall off the bone meat cooked over an open fire, offered simply with coleslaw and BBQ backed beans served on a tray by some grungy guy in a hair net. For some reason this experience is also made better if they are cooking it out back and you are filling up your gas tank as you order.

While the BBQ tradition originated from the southeast, it has spread throughout the US and now every region has its own BBQ variety.

The BBQ Across America adventure was conceived two years ago, when Shingai inspired by a PBS special on the regional variations, dreamed of comparing vinegary Carolina BBQ to sweet sauce heavy Memphis BBQ.

So, with visions of baby back ribs dancing in his head, he planned and plotted the trip for the past two years.  Upon announcing his plan to traverse the United States (east of the Mississippi at least), Anthony of course had to join him, as he couldn’t let his good friend brave the perils of gorging himself on BBQ and shitting himself stupid alone (after all what are friends for).  So armed with empty stomachs (seriously we didn’t east breakfast) and plenty of medical grade antacids we have left DC in search of BBQ nirvana.

The Plan:
Travel through the Southeast and Midwest, sampling each type of regional BBQ from famous spots in America - rate each – blog about it

Itinerary :
·    East Carolina BBQ – Goldsboro & Chapel Hill
·    West Carolina BBQ - Lexington, Shelby & Charlotte
·    Memphis  BBQ -Nashville & Memphis
·    Kansas City BBQ  - Kansas City, St. Louis and Owensboro, KY

BBQ Rating:
At each location we will order the most famous or unique dishes, and the typical BBQ offerings and sides.  Ratings will be based on a scale of 1-10 and judged on taste, presentation (the simpler the better) and ambiance (the more “hole-in-the-wall ‘ness” – yes we just made that word up) the higher the score.

Let the Adventure Begin!
